This specialty massage uses smooth heated stones. They are often made from basalt or black volcanic rock that absorb and retain heat well. It is a deeply soothing, relaxing form of massage. The heat from the stones penetrates the muscle helping to release more quickly than in a traditional massage. The therapist uses traditional strokes of Swedish massage while holding a heated stone. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another one. Heated stones may also be left in specific points along you spine, in the palms of your hands, or even between your toes to help improve the flow of energy in your body. If you have any inflammation or muscle injury, cold stones may be used. There are some precautions to having a hot stone massage. Make sure you have an experienced licensed therapist working on you. If the stones are too hot you may be burned or harm to your body may occur. A less experienced therapist may use too much pressure, so be sure to speak up if too much pressure or heat is applied. Technique is very important; if you have any doubts feel free to ask where your therapist learned hot stone massage and how long they have been doing it.
